Tribute to a Cedar, cedar wood (30x36x46) [Aug 2014]

This work is the continuation in a study of a cedar shrub. Two years ago I painted this same cedar in the work entitled, Twisted Cedar [Oct 2012]. Then it was still living, but a tough winter in northern Michigan, its home, proved too much and the plant died.

Upon removing it, a sad space was left behind. I stripped the cedar wood that was removed and selected its most evocative branches and mounted it back where it grew originally. See “before” painting and “after” sculpture below.
